Introduction
Teaching, learning and assessment (TLA) needs to be given appropriate recognition in any higher education institution, and this is the case at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). The Council for Higher Education (2004) advocates that the TLA strategy must be appropriate for the institutional type and it must simultaneously have a direct link with the institutional mission. The strategy also needs to consider the student composition, modes of delivery, appropriateness of the methods used while ensuring continuous upgrade of staff with regards to their methods they apply.
In view of the above, it is critical that the approaches used by academic staff in their TLA strategy are in line with the mission and the strategy of the institution. The UJ mission is to inspire its community to transform and serve humanity through innovation and the collaborative pursuit of knowledge. Aligned to this mission are the four important values as summed up below:
-
Imagination
-
Conversation
-
Regeneration
-
Ethical Foundation
The author’s personal teaching philosophy which has its specific focus on student engagement links well with these values. This portfolio seeks to highlight how its author uses various TLA activities in conjunction with his personal teaching philosophy in the promotion of teaching excellence and learning effectiveness within a Radiography programme at the UJ. The portfolio will therefore exhibit a stronger alignment to the UJ environment and will be presented in the following chapters:
Chapter 2 - Personal Teaching Philosophy.
Chapter 3 - Activities that support the personal teaching philosophy.
Chapter 3 - Conclusion
